Biomass production
Biomass is the oldest and the most commonly used source of renewable energy. It includes both household and organic waste as well as waste from farm production, e.g. straw. Straw is used for the production of briquettes as power plant fuel and is a good source of electric energy generated in the process of co-firing with coal. Biomass is produced by Bioenergia Invest, a subsidiary of POL-MOT Warfama SA. The share of renewable energy in total energy produced in Poland in 2009 was almost 9 percent, and is predicted to reach 10.4 percent in 2010. This is because Poland has been required by the European Union to produce 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. Moreover, the development of renewable energy sources production using co-firing technology is less complex and more cost-efficient (compared to e.g. wind farms) and requires lower capital expenditure.
